Tour description Thjórsárdalur - Hekla

Day 1: Arrival: Drive from Reykjavík to Húsatóftir

At 18.00 o'clock we pick up the guests at the flight bus terminal BSÍ in Reykjavík. Watch your step! The trip from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík BSÍ is done on your own. That's where the Reykjavik Excursions flight bus goes, www.re.is

We drive to the farm Húsatóftir in Sudisland, about 1,5 hours drive. There we are greeted with a dinner and get information about the coming days. Overnight stay in the guest house on the farm.

Day 2: Húsatóftir - Ásar

Departure from Húsatóftir. We ride along the river Thjórsá. THjórsá is a glacial river, the long river in Iceland with 230 km. We also pass the Búðarfoss waterfall. Our destination is the Ásar farm. While the horses can rest here on the pasture, we drive back to Húsatóftir by car and spend the night on the farm again.

Day 3: Ásar - climbing

In the morning we drive back to Ásar. Our destination is Tjórsárdalur. There were many ways to get there. The final decision will be made on site, depending on the weather, but Plan A is to ride through the pastures of the Fossnes farm and continue towards the highlands to a lonely valley with the cliff Klettur. Here we spend the evening together and sleep in the Hochlandhutte on two floors.

Day 4: Climbing - Climbing

We ride the whole day in the valley Thjórsárdalur and will visit the unique natural phenomena of the valley. The waterfall Hjálparfoss is framed by special irregular basalt formations, Háifoss - the second highest waterfall in Iceland, Gjáin - a unique phenomenon; a small, narrow green valley where water comes down from all directions and the excavated Viking farm Stöng. We'll spend another night in Klettur.

Day 5: Climbing - Fossnes

If we choose Klettur we choose the way over Klapparvað and through the forest that has been reforested since 1930. Continue past Sandártunga and to Fossnes farm. There the horses stay overnight and we either spend the night there or go back to Húsatóftir for the night.

Day 6: Fossnes - Húsatóftir

On this last day we also have different possibilities, depending on the weather and the amount of water in e.g. the river Laxá, we can ride through. But truly we ride past the farms Hæli and Hlíð and come down to the valley of the river Laxá. The weather decides on which side it goes on. We pass the farm Reykir, down again to the river Thjórsá on the way back to Húsatóftir where we also spend the night.

Day 7: Húsatóftir - Hengill - Reykajvík

After breakfast it's time to say goodbye, but before we enter the city our bus takes us to the volcanic area of Hengill. This area is beautiful and offers us very special volcanic landscapes and natural phenomena such as hot springs, lava formations, green thalers, small rivers, brooks and waterfalls. There are many hiking routes here and it is impossible to say which one is more beautiful. Which one we take depends on the weather for us!

In the late afternoon we stop in Reykajvík, who wants to go for a walk through the old town centre, some may fly home that evening, others spend another night - or several - in the town.
